What Should Cannabis Seeds Look Like?
The appearance of cannabis seeds is a question that raises several questions amongst growers. We often get asked about how cannabis seeds should seem, with regards to their size, shape and color, as these characteristics are believed to be closely related to seed quality. In this article we take a thorough look at the key physical characteristics of cannabis seeds in order to clarify any doubts that you may have.
This guide has been conceived to answer all the main questions that we frequently get asked by clients and growers concerning the physical characteristics of our main product: high-quality cannabis seeds.
Our 15 years in the field have given us solid knowledge as well as an extensive perspective on this topic, so it is an honour for us to be able to share our experience with all of you in the cannabis community.
The size of cannabis seeds
As the majority of the cannabis cultivars that are currently on the market are polyhybrids, the size of the seeds can vary depending on their hereditary line.
Some customers, for instance, contact us to inform us that they have bought Critical + seeds and they believe they look too tiny. But this is a normal feature of this variety: we've seen millions of Critical + seeds and we can attest that they are inherently smaller than others. It is thus incorrect to assume that this is a marker of poor quality.
If, on the other hand, the seeds appear too big, this may be triggered by a deficiency of macronutrients during the plant's growth cycle. As any grower with adequate experience will realize, calcium deficiencies are addressed by adding calcium and magnesium, a combination that helps reestablishing the ideal nutritional balance of plants.
So in this situation, an increase in size could be a direct indicator of this supplementation of calcium and magnesium, which is performed in order to remedy that macronutrient shortage during growth. This has no impact on the crop's potential for sprouting, growth, flowering, or yield, nor on the formation of the organoleptic properties of the buds (aroma, flavour and effect).
So we can openly say that this difference is simply cosmetic. If we take the case of a Moby Dick seed, its size will most probably be bigger than those of Critical +, although you can also discover slight variations between seeds from the same strain. Don't overlook that, as with all living beings, cannabis seeds are also genetically different amongst themselves.
The form of cannabis seeds
Cannabis seeds can also exhibit slight changes at structural level. It's perfectly normal to see minor differences in the oval shape of seeds from the same batch.
In some situations their shape is more elongated; whereas in others one of the ends can be rounded whilst the other is more sharp. But this is no cause for concern: as with dimensions, these slight differences in the outline of the seeds are simply visual and have nothing to do with quality.

The colour of cannabis seeds
Although it is accurate that ripe cannabis seeds tend to have a darker shell that can range from brown to black, with lines that look like zebra stripes, this cannot be regarded as a reliable quality marker by itself.
Yet once more, this is a misleading physical attribute that does not assure the germination capacity or overall qualities of a seed. A high-quality strain can also be pale or dark grey in colour.
Let's take the case of Critical + once more, one of our consistent bestsellers that has had outstanding success across the world thanks to its outstanding scent, flavour, effect, and production capacity.
Critical + is a good example that colour, opposite to what many growers believe, is not always a quality marker: these undeniably high-quality seeds show a distinctly pale grey, almost white-ish grey, to a medium grey colour.
However, a green-tinted colour is an obvious sign of underdevelopment, which means that the seed hasn't developed fully or it has not received all the necessary resources to reach full maturity. In this specific case, if you buy seeds with this color you need to contact your supplier immediately and try to have them substituted.
If this occurs to you with one of our seeds, https://nativesusa.com/ (https://nativesusa.com/) don't hesitate to contact us directly. Send us a few of pictures so we can review them out, and our customer service team will exchange them as quickly as possible.
Another aspect that can be deceptive is the fact that a mature, freshly-harvested cannabis seed has a more vibrant and darker colour than after it's been stored for 1 to 2 months.
This could be likened to a baby whose physical look quickly evolves during their first few days of life in order to adapt to the entirely new outside environment.
The same thing happens with cannabis seeds: the storage and the different stages before they're marketed can entail light and humidity variations, as well as a little of oxidation, which may slightly affect the colour of the shell but certainly has no impact on the final product. Once more, this is just an aesthetic effect.
We trust that this guide has provided you with some valuable information about the physical features of your cannabis seeds to help you interpret them more accurately before starting their sprouting and cultivation.
