The biggest cost driver is never technology — it is almost always unclear scope. Every ambiguity in the brief turns into a buffer inside the number you receive. A team that has no visibility into what happens on the unhappy path will assume the more expensive option. Investing a few days in a proper discovery can cut the final cost by far more than negotiating the rate.
Third-party integrations are another reliable source of cost. A feature that touches only your own data is predictable; the same functionality talking to a legacy ERP is another matter entirely. The effort lives in the other system: poor documentation, long certification processes, inconsistent data. Ask each bidder to break integrations out as separate items, since this is the usual source of overruns.
Quality attributes quietly rewrite the estimate. An internal tool used by twenty people is a very different build from the same functionality serving thousands of external customers. Audit and compliance requirements, availability guarantees, scalability, data retention rules and multi-language support each add weeks of work. State them early or else expect the estimate to move later.
The team you are quoted matters a great deal. An hourly rate reveals little on its own: a senior engineer at a higher rate can be cheaper per delivered feature than two juniors who need heavy code review. Also ask who else is billed: custom laravel development project management, quality assurance, release engineering and UX design are legitimate costs, igaming developer but they should be named rather than hidden inside a blended rate.
The quoted figure is rarely the total cost. Plan for hosting, third-party licences, logging and alerting and a maintenance allowance annually. A reasonable rule of thumb holds that software in active use needs a recurring percentage of the original budget annually simply to stay current. Ignoring this is the most common budgeting mistake.
